Winchester Lever Rifle: Lever Action, 30-30 caliber, sometimes referred
to as a "saddle gun".
The .30-30 Winchester, .30 WCF (Winchester Center
Fire) or 7.62X51 mm cartridge was first marketed in early 1895 for the
Winchester Model 1894 lever-action rifle. The .30-30 was America's
first small-bore sporting rifle cartridge designed for smokeless powder.
The .30-30 has established itself as one of the most common deer
cartridges in North America.
Although the original name is .30 WCF, the -30 in
the designation was added to the name by Marlin, who did not want to put
the name of rival Winchester on their rifles when they were chambered
for the cartridge soon after its introduction. The -30 stands for the
standard load of 30 grains of smokeless powder. Over time, Marlin's
variation on the name stuck.
This Winchester 30-30 is my favorite lever
action rifle: Note that I used .30-30, 30-30, 30/30, 30.30 and 3030 here
in order to make this page easier to find by whatever variation a person
searches for. This gun has seen it's share of use since 1969. The wood
is sun bleached from spending a lot of time on the rear window rack of a
pick-up truck.
